The Roofing Square

The "square" is the fundamental unit of roofing measurement. One roofing square = 100 square feet of roof surface area. All roofing materials — shingles, underlayment, and most accessories — are sold and priced in squares or fractions thereof.

When a contractor says your roof is "20 squares," they mean your roof has approximately 2,000 square feet of actual surface area (before waste factor).

Why Your Roof Is Larger Than Your Floor Plan

Your roof\'s actual surface area is always larger than your home\'s floor plan for two reasons:

  • Overhang: The roof extends past the walls on all sides, adding area that is not part of the interior floor plan
  • Slope multiplier: A sloped surface is longer than the horizontal distance it covers. As pitch increases, the actual surface area per horizontal square foot increases

Slope area multipliers by pitch:

  • 4:12 pitch: 1.054 (5.4% more area than flat plan)
  • 6:12 pitch: 1.118 (11.8% more)
  • 8:12 pitch: 1.202 (20.2% more)
  • 10:12 pitch: 1.302 (30.2% more)
  • 12:12 pitch: 1.414 (41.4% more)

How Roofers Measure

Modern contractors typically use one of three methods:

  • Physical measurement: Crew walks the roof with tape measures, measuring each plane individually, then calculating pitch multiplier for each slope
  • Satellite measurement services: Services like EagleView and GAF Quick Measure generate detailed aerial measurements with pitch, squares, and feature dimensions. Commonly used for estimates without a physical site visit.
  • Ground-level estimation: For simple gable roofs, some contractors calculate from ground-level measurements using pitch and overhang assumptions. Less accurate for complex rooflines.

Material Quantity Calculation

  • Standard architectural shingles: approximately 3 bundles per square
  • Waste factor: 10-15% for simple roofs; 15-20% for complex rooflines with many hips, valleys, and penetrations
  • A 20-square roof requires approximately 60-66 bundles of standard shingles
  • Underlayment is sold in rolls covering 1-4 squares depending on product
  • Ridge caps, starter strips, and accessories are separate line items

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square = 100 square feet of actual roof surface area. A typical 2,000 sq ft home has 22-25 roofing squares depending on pitch and overhang.

Why is my roof bigger than my home\'s footprint?

Two reasons: the roof overhangs the walls on all sides, and the sloped surface is longer than the flat horizontal area below it. A 6:12 pitch has 11.8% more surface area than the flat floor plan.

How do roofers calculate the number of shingle bundles needed?

Total squares x 3 bundles per square, plus 10-15% waste factor. A 20-square roof needs approximately 60-66 bundles of standard architectural shingles.
